Our Executive Director, Michael Dorn, is one of the most respected, widely recognized, highly credentialed and trusted campus safety experts in the world.  Michael’s work has taken him to Mexico, Canada, Central America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.  Selected as the top school safety expert by Jane’s after an international search, Michael has authored and co-authored 25 books on school safety and has two more books due for publication this year. Michael has also authored hundreds of articles as well as columns for School Planning and Management, Campus Safety, Today’s School, School Transportation News and College Planning and Management magazines.  During his 25-year public safety career, Michael served as:
  • Police Officer, Corporal, Sergeant and Lieutenant for the Mercer University Police Department
  • Chief of Police for the Bibb County, Georgia Public School System
  • School Safety Specialist for the Office of the Governor – Georgia Emergency Management Agency (top expert for the nation’s largest state government school safety center)
  • State Antiterrorism Planner for the Georgia Office of Homeland Security Terrorism Division – Georgia Emergency Management Agency
  • Lead Program Manager for the Georgia Office of Homeland Security Terrorism Division – Georgia Emergency Management Agency
  • Senior Analyst for Public Safety and Emergency Management – Jane’s (top expert for the renowned 105-year-old British defense, intelligence and school safety publisher with offices in nine countries)

A graduate of the prestigious three-month FBI National Academy, Dartmouth College’s Advanced Russian Immersion Language Program and bachelor’s and master’s programs at Mercer University, Michael also received 14 days of intensive antiterrorism and counterterrorism training from the Israel Police, Israel Defense Forces and the Mossad through the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange Program at Georgia State University. Michael has completed more than 3,000 classroom hours of formal law enforcement, fire service and emergency management training. Michael also holds a certificate in Management Development from the American Management Association – Harvard School of Business delivered through Mercer University.

Michael’s expertise has been routinely used by many organizations including the FBI, U.S. Department of Education, National Emergency Management Association, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Israeli Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, U.S. Attorney General’s Office, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and dozens of state police, emergency management agencies and departments of education.  Michael’s training videos are in use by more than 75,000 school systems and public safety agencies in more than 30 countries.  The FBI, U.S. Secret Service, Texas Rangers, Israel Police and British Intelligence and security services are among the organizations that have used his training videos.

Michael has worked on more than 30 Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) grants funded through the United States Department of Education. He has worked on more than a hundred major school safety initiatives through state and federal departments of education, homeland security, law enforcement, public health and emergency management including the development project for the United States Department of Education’s Practical Information on Crisis Planning – A Guide for Schools and Communities, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) manuals on designing school facilities that are resistant to terrorist attacks and natural disasters,  and the United States Department of Education and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Enforcement (BATFE) school bomb threat planning CD ROM.

Sought out as a neutral, accurate and qualified expert by reputable media organizations, Michael has been featured on 20/20, CNN, Good Morning America, MSNBC, ABC World News Tonight and has been interviewed by the BBC, New York Times, Time Magazine, Tokyo Broadcasting and hundreds of other media organizations from more than a dozen countries.   Michael has also been qualified as an expert witness for superior and federal court trials in Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and Nevada.  Michael has taught advanced sessions on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) for architects, building planners, educators and law enforcement officers at the School of Architecture at the University of Wisconsin as well as for the National Crime Prevention Institute.
