Expert Witness Services

Schools in the United States, Canada and the U.K., unfortunately, face school safety related litigation on a much too frequent basis. Though not a primary focus of our non-profit center, Safe Havens analysts accept carefully screened cases that will have an impact on school safety. We will consider cases where school districts, independent schools and charter schools have been sued for proactive safety and security measures, when death or serious injury have occurred due to incompetence by unqualified school safety consultants or trainers, and cases where death or serious injury have occurred due to gross disregard for school safety practices. 

For example, Safe Havens Executive Director Michael Dorn accepted a case to defend a Pennsylvania school district when it became clear to him that the district was being sued by a disgruntled employee who was terminated because he blatantly refused to follow the districts reasonable security procedures. After reviewing Michael Dorn’s video taped deposition, the judge stopped the trial on the first day of a four-day trial and dismissed the case against the district.

In another instance, Michael Dorn was retained as an expert for litigation against a school safety consulting firm that performed work for the school where a fatal multiple victim shooting occurred at the Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota. The case was settled shortly after the firm’s legal counsel requested Michael Dorn’s full resume.
